Wars Fought

One day as I sat musing,
In my favourite rocking chair,
Thoughts of grandma filled my mind,
With the treasures that she share.

The attic held the very things,
I’ve learned to hold so dear,
Photos of her wedding dress,
With granddads medals near.

I felt deep sadness as I looked,
At the man she loved so dear,
His life was lost in battle,
My grandmas greatest fear.

His uniform was neatly tucked,
Inside the attic chest,
The purple heart was one of many,
Received upon his death.

His uniform lay covered,
By our countries stars and stripes,
The flag that he had fought for,
That ultimately cost his life.

Pearl harbour was a cowardly act,
Where many young lives were lost,
The families that were left to grieve,
Would realize the cost.

He was very proud to see my mom,
Wearing her wedding dress,
The one that grandma wore that day,
When she shone and looked her best.

For all the ones who feel the pain,
Of the wars that have been fought,
Remember they died not in vain,
It’s for our freedom that they fought.
