The Pains Of Growing Old
While shopping at a busy mall today, I came upon a friend,
He asked me if I had a moment...perhaps one that I could lend,
I replied of course and opened my ears to what he had to say,
Then stumbled to find the proper words that would help to make his day.
He began by asking if I had noticed a change in how my ol' body felt,
Whether or not my legs hurt at night, and if I had to loosen my belt!
He also informed me of his poor aching back, and his vision was on the decline,
I tried to offer comforting words, by saying his was the same as mine!
He also seemed bothered by the number of trips, he makes to the bathroom each night,
And wondered if perhaps his bladder, wasn't holding everything just right!
Another thing that he had noticed of late, was his food not tasting the same,
Thinking perhaps that his taste buds, quite likely was what were to blame.
He informed me how easy it was for him, to fall asleep while watching T.V.,
And if he didn't make sure he was in bed by nine, come morning he could barely see!
A question I knew he was embarrassed to ask, was my memory beginning to fail?
And that generally speaking did I feel just like him, kinda' weak and feeling frail!
When I assured him that yes, I had experienced those things, but was trying so hard to forget,
I noticed a smile creeping over his face, as he said " oh yea...I just bet"!
While explaining as gently as I possibly could, I looked my friend straight in the eye,
And said " the days of our youth are about over, but our memories will never die "!
To age is as natural as a Mother giving birth, and begins from the day we are born,
The best we can do is give all that we can, and give in the best possible form.
Love and compassion is what I speak of, make certain we all do our share,
To help all the children who must learn from us, so they in turn can show others they care.
