A Portrait Of Alzheimer
Alzheimer Disease: The Attack On Memory
Only moments before he thought he parked the car,
But now he saw it was no longer there,
Several minutes had passed as he stared at the spot,
And the space where he gazed was now bare!
He began to wander away aimlessly,
While the thoughts in his mind became muddled,
Why was he having such a lapse in memory,
As his mind became increasingly troubled.
An hour had passed and still he had not found,
Or remembered where he had put his car,
Finally he realized exactly where he was,
And a voice asking, "Do you know where you are"?
His wife's hands appeared worn and wrinkled,
As she held him so close in her arms,
A neighbour had witnessed him walking,
And had saved him from inevitable harm.
He had managed somehow to walk away from his home,
And make his way to a busy shopping mall,
Barely missing being run over in traffic,
His forehead now bleeding from a fall.
Six months before he had been given a test,
Which he knew he would pass with ease,
But the results indicated far beyond doubt,
He suffered early stages of Alzheimer's Disease !
At the time of diagnosis no facility was available,
That could ensure a safe environment and care,
And his wife was faced with the almost impossible task,
Caring for her husband in a home they had shared.
With unending tears streaming down from her cheeks,
She now realized she could no longer cope,
And with a trembling hand she reach down toward the phone,
Praying that a voice would offer her hope.
And as if the Lord himself had taken the call,
She heard a voice saying, "Yes..we have room",
Overcome with relief and the happiness she felt,
Knowing darkness would no longer loom.
Do not burden yourself with obligation or guilt,
When a loved one is inflicted with this Disease,
Make the decision required with their interest at heart,
It is not your own feelings you must please!
